How to Tie Belt
One would think that the tying of the Obi (belt) would be a simple matter and quite standard. In fact it’s anything but simple or standard. It would seem that there are 10 or so different philosophies regarding how to tie ones belt. So what’s a student to do? When in doubt, tie your belt the way your instructor ties his belt.
1. The first step is to fold the belt in half, to determine the center, and then place the center point at the front of your waist.
2. Wrap each end of the belt around to your back then continue around to the front.
3. Taking one side of the belt in your left hand and the other in your right cross the right part over the left and then wrap it underneath both pieces of the belt.
4. The new left end goes over top of the right.
5. It is pulled through the loop that was created.
6. Taking both ends pull the belt out to your sides to tighten your knot.
